What is a Super Heavy Duty wheelchair?

A Super Heavy Duty wheelchair is essentially a bariatric wheelchair. A heavy-duty, hard-wearing wheelchair specifically designed to accommodate larger individuals of up to 150kg.

That being said, it is not only weight that needs to be considered but the body shape. Body shape determines the width of a wheelchair.

Regular wheelchairs can comfortably accommodate 100kgs. For users who are over this weight limit, they will need to consider a heavy-duty or super-heavy-duty wheelchair for mobility purposes.
A heavy-duty can usually accommodate 100 – 125kg. The super heavy-duty,125 – 150kg.

Similarly, regular wheelchairs have a seat width between 16 to 20 inches.
Heavy duty wheelchairs have seat widths from 20 to 30 inches. They are also more durable, and hard-wearing, due to the reinforced upholstery, frames, and wheels.

Consequently, because of the heavy reinforcement, bariatric wheelchairs weigh more than a standard wheelchair  That being said, the WINFAR Super Heavy duty weights in at 21,5kg – and its still foldable and manageable for an adult male.

It is a testament to the durability of this wheelchair, that it is often seen in use in shopping malls and hospitals.

Considerations when choosing a Heavy Duty Wheelchair.

The user:
Standard wheelchair weight limits tend to be around the 100 – 115kg mark, so it is very important that you are accurately weighed. Never estimate.

Your environment:
Where will the chair be used? And how? It is critically important that if the heavy-duty wheelchair is for indoor use the home and/or work environment are considered. Because the chair is wider and deeper than a standard chair, it has a larger turning circle, which means it needs more space for comfortable maneuverability – especially when negotiating doorways and corridors.

The wheels:
Consider the selected wheel type of the wheelchair. Solid or PU (Polyurethane) tyres are made from rubber or plastic and are often considered the most suitable as they cannot be punctured or deflate. The major downside of a solid tyre is that it is heavier, making it more difficult to lift and transport. This may not be an issue but bear it in mind.
